Girls Eating Green
Look closely at the food photo to the right. Notice anything unusual? You guessed it! No tablecloth. You might be thinking the absence of tablecloth a slight on the part of the restaurant. Think again!
Java Journal deems Riddle’s Penultimate Cafe & Wine Bar in University City a “green” favorite. From its “green” bill of fare to its energy-conserving, no-tablecloth settings, Riddle’s is the place to go for a great menu featuring the best of Missouri meats and produce, as well as some faraway favorites.
Let’s begin! What a treat — finding my favorite Petite Syrah on the menu – Bogle (see note to the right from a wine connoisseur). Yes, we had more than a glass.
We started with Crab Stuffed Artichoke Bottoms – and crab IS the operative word – crab, held together only with homemade cornbread stuffing and a prayer. Delicious!
The soup of the day was Lentil and Andouille: “The ancient flavor of green lentils pair beautifully with Andouille Sausage from Paul Prudhomme in N’Awlins!” Honestly, this was one of the best Lentil soups I’ve ever eaten.
We shared entrées of Grilled Halibut and Jamaican Pork Loin. The Loin is, as the menu says, “…from the happy pigs raised by the 52 family farm owners of the Ozark Mountain Pork Co-op in Mountain View, Missouri.” Riddle’s marinates their loins (no pun intended) in dark rum and spices, then grills and serves with a spicy molasses glaze. I ordered Brussels sprouts, served with shallot butter and pine nuts — excellent.
And the Halibut — grilled and set atop a piquant relish, and finished with a dollop of roasted red pepper puree. It was served with spaghetti squash, prepared with cinnamon butter and almonds. Absolutely succulent!
For dessert — Bill’s Chocolate Cake, a dark chocolate layer cake, soaked with chocolate liqueur and layered with caramel and toasted pecans, then filled and covered with Créme Chantilly. We had it with a scoop of Riddle’s Homemade Ice Cream.
            Did I mention the wine…?
