St. Louis’ One-Ring Circus to Perform All New Show June 5 to 22
Circus Flora – St. Louis’ much-admired one-ring circus – has announced an all new show for its twenty-second season production “Sherwood Forest,” a tribute to the legend of Robin Hood and his band of merry men. The show will premiere June 5–22 under the air-conditioned red and white big top in Grand Center, St. Louis’ Arts and Entertainment District, adjacent to Powell Hall (corner of Grand Blvd. and Samuel Sheppard Dr.) The Circus Flora ensemble will bring this classic tale to life – the perfect story to showcase a mixture of acrobatics, animals, antics and music.
With its rich performance history and world-renowned circus stars, Circus Flora takes everyone on a journey through time to Medieval England. Complete with horses, heroes and hilarious adventures, Robin Hood fights to bring justice to Sherwood Forest. Many of the world’s greatest circus performers become his merry band of outlaws, using skill to conduct daring raids against the tyrannies of the villain — the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham!  They take from the rich and give to the poor, winning the hearts of the villagers — especially the lovely Maid Marian and her ladies in waiting.
“I’ve wanted to do the legend of Robin Hood for years,” said Circus Flora’s artistic director and producer Ivor David Balding. “The tale resonates down through the ages – thanks to the legendary themes of romance, action, humor, survival in the wilderness, the triumph of right over might and nostalgia for a bygone age of chivalry.  Most importantly, it’s fun.”
Circus Flora performers will whisk us to a magical place with their artistry — through heart-stopping aerial acts, breathtaking equestrian feats and gravity-defying acrobatics. Whether a returning favorite or a surprise new act, the brand-new 2008 production reunites Circus Flora stars: Cecil MacKinnon as Yo-Yo; the world-famous Flying Wallendas; Giovanni Zoppe as Nino the Clown; St. Louis Arches; Ianna Spirit Riders; and the Circus Flora band.
Highlighting the show this year are the award-winning Flying Cortes, featuring their thrilling triple somersault; on the flying trapeze, Lisa Dufresne, accomplished international competitor performing with her world class Haute Ecole horse and her “mighty mites” liberty ponies; with many additional acts and performers to be announced.
By fusing the classic traditions of the circus with theater techniques, a world-class ensemble cast will showcase this ballad, with many a surprise. Will Robin Hood defeat the evil Sheriff of Nottingham? Will Robin win the hand and heart of the beautiful Maid Marian? Will the people of Nottinghamshire rally behind Robin to overthrow the tyrant? Or will the dastardly henchmen of the Sheriff keep the good people down?  Come cheer Robin and his Merry Men on to victory! With original, live music, performers, animals and a famous tale, St. Louis’ own Circus Flora continues to present “magical theater in a sawdust ring.”
In addition to premiering an entirely new show, Circus Flora will introduce a brand new theater seating system as well.  Gone are the days of metal bleachers without backs.  Sit back and relax in individual bucket seats as Robin Hood and his merry men whisk you away to Sherwood Forest!
Tickets will be available at all MetroTix outlets; MetroTix.com, as well as by phone through MetroTix, (800)293-5949, at the Circus Flora Box Office in the Centene Center for the Arts & Education and by calling Circus Flora, (314) 289-4040.
Beginning May 27, the Circus Flora box office will relocate to the front of the Circus Flora tent, behind Powell Hall (corner of Grand Blvd. and Samuel Shepard Dr.)  For group discounts, call Circus Flora at (314) 289-4040. For additional information, visit the website www.circusflora.org.
Showtimes are Tuesday–Friday at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m.; Sunday at 1:00 and 5:00 p.m.; and “Little Top Wednesday” at 10:00 a.m., a special one-hour show for the kids or the “kids at heart.” Tickets for “Sherwood Forest” are $8 - $35.  Look for special FANtastic Tuesday prices.
